Keeping track of your fellow classmates’ participation in Spirit Days
Since we’ve decided to have a raffle every month, we’ll need the names of Spirit Day participants.  Make a list of the people in your grade.  Have a column that identifies each Spirit Day and then check off names as people participate.  You’ll write all the names on separate pieces of paper at the end of the month and we’ll hold the raffle at an all school meeting and give out a prize.

Post various Community Service opportunities once a month
Use the bulletin board in the atrium to post information for fellow students. You’ll need either a date, address, contact phone number or some other pertinent information so that they can tear off a piece of paper and plan their community service time. Remember to make a photo copy of what you post so that you can put it in your portfolio. Find at least one new opportunity every month. The local newspaper is a great source as well as the internet.

Talk/share our meeting topics and decisions with your classmates once a week
Your English teachers have agreed to give a couple minutes during your class to tell your friends what is going on.  The day after meetings, ask your teacher for a chance to speak and share information.  This is not the time for discussion and feedback.  This time is only for you to share information. One Sided. Keep a log in the portfolio of which days you spoke and what you said. Remember to do this once a week. It might be as simple as reminding them to check the bulletin board for community service opportunities, to participate in a Spirit Day, to join in a fundraiser or to attend another upcoming event.

During grade level meetings listen and take notes of your classmates’ opinions and desires, so that you can represent them at our leadership meetings
Often our Friday schoolwide assembly consists of a class meeting.  This is the perfect time to act as your class representative and hear what everyone has to say. Make sure that everyone has a voice that can be heard. Specifically call on people who aren’t bold enough to speak their mind without being prompted. Bring any notes that you take to leadership meeting so that your classmates’ desires and opinions can be represented by the entire school leadership. If you are chatting with classmates at lunch and they say something that should be shared during our meetings, be sure to jot it down after lunch in this same note taking area in your portfolio.

Lead/Run one fundraiser
The fundraiser that you choose to do can be for your class, the school, or some nonprofit organization. Make a plan. Write it down. Your written plan must be included in your portfolio.  Get my approval and then make it happen.

Spearhead a policy/schoolwide desire/change campaign
Using the list that we’ve created or another idea from a classmate, initiate a campaign for change. Decide what is important to you and make a bid for getting it done. This might mean coming to a staff meeting with a proposal, approaching Bruce with an idea, or getting on the agenda for a Charter Council meeting. Some decisions might require holding a school wide vote before you can take action.

Plan an event
We’ve started a list of events for the year. Choose one or create your own and make it happen.  You’ll need a place, date, chaperones, and advertisements. We’ll need to coordinate these various events as a group. Your portfolio must include all your written plans and copies of advertisements.

Keep notes during meetings
Starting today, your portfolio must include meeting notes that you’ve taken.

Complete at least 1 and 1/2 hours of community service every week
This can be completed during our designated class time together.  If you are absent, make sure that you perform some service on your own time. By the end of the school year, you’ll have earned at least 45 hours of community service from this class alone.
