Instructors:  Dr. Robert Woodhall, a chiropractor in Nevada City, has been fencing since 1980, and has been teaching locally since 1998.   He can be reached most evenings at 432-1750 , or call his assistant Lynne Hurrell at 273-5807.  The Intermediate/Advanced instructor, Keith Hurrell, started fencing in 1958 under World Champion Maestro Aldo Nadi, and in 1978 studied sabre fencing under European Champion, Maitre Doris DeJong.

Course objectives:  Our main goal is that you have fun learning to fence in a safe and supportive environment. As these classes contain all skill levels, we try to meet students where they are and work to increase their expertise.  Beginning classes start with foil instruction.  The Intermediate/Advanced class includes both foil and sabre instruction and tournament techniques with electrical blades.  Instruction in epee is also available.

Equipment:  Most equipment is provided by Bitney Springs Prep High School. Class equipment cannot leave the classroom.   However, if you have your own equipment, please feel free to bring it and use it.  If interested in purchasing equipment, I recommend American Fencer’s Supply in San Francisco: 650-359-7911, www.AMFence.com , as they have graciously donated much equipment for our program and have a great starter package.  Another great source for gear is Victory Fencing Gear in Millbrae, CA: www.victoryfencinggear.com; 650-552-9994.

Proper Attire:  As this is an athletic sport, please wear clothes you can comfortably move in, such as sweats and a T- shirt.   I recommend you wear clothes that cover your legs for safety reasons.  Flat-soled tennis/athletic shoes are recommended; do not wear platform/wedged tennis shoes or sandals.

Attendance:  The more you attend, the more you will get out of this course.  If you plan on being gone for an extended time (say 2 or more weeks) it is helpful to let me know, so I don’t fill your spot with another student on a waiting list.  Please be on time for class.  Classes start promptly at 6:45pm and 8:15pm.  Should a class be canceled due to snow, etc students will be contacted by phone and/or email as soon as possible.  Please make sure your phone # and email is on the class list.
